Course Objective
Art is part of our lives every day! And we've all heard about great names in art and their works. In this course, we will understand which artistic avant-gardes many of these artists belong to, starting from the 19th century to the 20th century, understanding historical contexts and how they were reflected in the arts.
Program content
1. Introduction: Understanding ideas that changed the history of art.
The course on Artistic Avant-gardes is an exploration of modern art. We will learn about the artistic movements that emerged in the 19th and early 20th centuries, such as Cubism, Futurism, Dadaism, and Surrealism.
2. Realism: truth can be revolutionary
This lesson presents Realism as an artistic avant-garde movement that questions the impositions of the Academy, being revolutionary for its commitment to truth. In this episode, aspects of the work "A Burial at Ornans" by Gustave Courbet will be analyzed.
3. Impressionism: Expanding the Spaces of Art
Understand how Impressionism was a movement influenced by the social and technological changes of the 19th century. The artistic avant-garde will be analyzed through the works of Monet, Renoir, and Degas.
4. Post-Impressionism – feelings leaping off the canvas
This episode discusses post-impressionism and its characteristics, in order to understand how artists like van Gogh, Cézanne, and Gauguin experimented with colors and textures to convey their feelings about the world they saw and lived in.
5. Cubism – a new perspective at the beginning of the century
Cubism proposed new ways of portraying reality in art, simplifying forms and exploring multiple perspectives. With artists such as Picasso, Braque, Popova, and many others, the movement unfolded for decades and marked the modernity of the 20th century.
6. Expressionism: portraying the depths of humanity.
Discover Expressionism, an artistic avant-garde that seeks to express emotions and break with conventions. Connect with artists through paintings like 'Painting of a Street in Berlin' and 'Nude with Cat' as you immerse yourself in this movement that embraces subjectivity.

Dadaism challenges the rules and questions the meaning of art. Emerging during a time of war, this ironic and absurd avant-garde movement proposes questioning rational processes, exploring chance and spontaneity.
9. Neoplasticism: the essence in art and design.
Join us on a journey through the essential elements of art, where lines, shapes, and colors transcend representation. Prepare to be inspired by the neoplasticist legacy and its ongoing impact on the art world.
10. Surrealism: Unveiling the Unconscious
Journey into the captivating avant-garde movement that explores the depths of the human mind. From dreamlike paintings to mind-bending films, embrace the fantastic and delve into the surrealists' quest to explore our hidden desires and mysteries.
Methodology
The course will be taught entirely online, providing flexibility for participants to access classes from anywhere and at any convenient time. The classes consist of short videos, allowing students to learn at their own pace, pausing when necessary, and reviewing the content as many times as they wish.
Instructor
Giovanna Gaba She holds a postgraduate degree in Art History and a bachelor's degree in Fashion Design. She teaches Fashion Design, Fashion Business, Graphic Design, Digital Design, and Animation Design at Anhembi Morumbi University, and also teaches postgraduate courses at Grupo Ânima and Senac, in Strategic Management in Fashion Business and Creative Direction and Fashion Styling. An investor in vegan startups, she has over 10 years of experience in Communication, focusing on Visual Communication in the publishing sector in Brazil and the United States (Las Vegas, NV and Hollywood, CA), in addition to working in Brand Communication in fashion marketing departments.
